Current Show - Getting There

PhotoArts Group - Current ShowThe concept is to have our photographers do images of any kind of transportation, public or private that show how to get where people want to go. It could be planes, trains, trolleys, buses, automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, or walking. The concept is to present images in the most interesting and creative way possible. i.e.: Still, moving, in the air, in or out of focus—or maybe just from an unusual angle. Probably in color, but could be B&W.

March Show - Bright Lights, Big City - Coffee & Art, San Diego

A variety of photographs, some suggestions would be: the obvious night city shots, fireworks, daytime city scenes, abstract city scenes, architectural, cars, parades or festivals, parks, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, anything related to city life or urban environment. This is open to international cities, all of the U.S., not just looking for San Diego shots.

April Show - A Place of One's Own

We all have a favorite place, maybe several--a place where we feel particularly at ease or full of energy; a place that evokes memories of events or people who have special meaning for us; a place that has triggered some of our best photographs. Maybe a quiet place like these: a spot by the river, a library alcove, an art gallery bench, an intimate garden, a room from childhood, a window seat, a booth in a diner, a seat behind the wheel of a special car, a back porch, a staircase. Or maybe an active place like these: a sports stadium, a sports bar (or any other kind), a city street, a front porch, a PAG meeting, an auction house, a rodeo, a grand park, an amusement park. Most of these places we share with others, but they can still be our own because of our unique connection with them. Other people have special places too; even animals do. So pick out a special place--either yours or someone else's-- and capture it for us all to enjoy with you.

May Show - Photoshopography

Details to come

June Show - Out of the Dark

All images will be shot at night, in low light or no light conditions. The light source could include moonlight, streetlights, stage lights or flash lights for light painting. At night our camera sees light and details that our human eye misses. For me night photography is like unwrapping a multi layer gift. The first layer is what my camera captures that I couldn't see, and the second layer is the colors and details discovered during the editing process.

July Show - A World of Hurt

August Show - Out on a Limb

September Show - Breakin' the Rules

Lining the paths of our creative evolutions, rules serve us as practical reminders of best practices that we can apply to enhance the overall quality of our photographic imagery. Familiar to many, the "rule of thirds" is a good example where the temptation to locate the main subject directly in the center of the frame are gradually displaced by a discipline to place it off to the side. Results are generally more pleasing when this or other rules are followed, but not always. Instead of blindly applying the rule of thirds by placing an old cathedral towards one side of the frame, we remain in command when we choose to rebelliously position it dead center to enhance its perfect symmetry. We assert our creative authority when we make the bold choice to have our subject stare outside from the edge of the frame (with head down and arms folded) to support a visual message about an uncertain future. The message is that artistic reason is dynamic while rules are static. It follows that knowing when to break the rules is just as important as knowing when to adhere to them. The "Breakin' the Rules" theme encourages participants to carefully examine their typical approaches to photography, experiment with suspending learned behaviors that are tied to a sense of purpose, and witness the creativity that emerges. Take control of your success by envisioning very specifically how breakin' the rules will enhance the visual messages you are trying to communicate!

October Show - Up Tight

The concept is for close in or up close or tightly framed images of people or objects that illicit a strong emotion. Examples: an unusual macro photo (photo of small object), image of part of an object such as the tail fin of the red car that was shown at Autopia (that is a great image), face or body of a person or a body part (e.g., Michelangelo's Hands – I can think of lots of variations and I'm sure you can too), a tightly-framed head shot, a tightly-framed body shot, a close-up of a group hugging/crying/laughing, a close up of an animal on the hunt/playing

November Show - The Magic of Water

Most of the human body is composed of water (by mass, human cells consist of 65–90% water). Most of the earth's surface is water (about 70% of the planet is covered in ocean). Wars have been fought over water (the California Water Wars persist). We drink water, play in it, swim in it, use it to generate power, and to quell fires. Water is everywhere and in everything. Let us use our imaginations and creativity to capture the magic and omnipresence of water, from dew drops to magnificent falls, in stunning photographic images.

December Show - Faith

The dictionary defines faith as:confidence or trust in a person or thing; belief that is not based on proof. Every day in our lives, we accept part of our existence and our reality on "faith"; that things will continue to be as we expect them to be. We take "leaps of faith" and "have faith in our fellow man". We quiet our doubts because "we have faith" and we draw strength through hard times because we "lean on our faith". This show is an exploration of what we take for granted and what in our lives we accept because we have "faith". Appropriate for this show would be photos of sunsets (we have faith that the sun will always rise), photos of religious iconography (we have faith in a creator or a higher power), photos of sky divers (we have faith that our parachute will open and that we'll land safely), and photos of children and their parents (we have faith that our parents will always keep us safe and protected). Determine what things you take for granted and accept on "faith" and show us in your photography.
